Lacuna Coil is undeniable with their big lush sound
and the twin vocal attack of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro. This
band has garnered the attention of America through their relentless
touring and tremendous stage presence. The big crunchy guitar sound
laid down buy Cristiano Migliore and Marco Emanuele Biazzi followed
by the rhythm section to die for, consisting of drummer Cristiano
Mozzati and bassist Marco Coti Zelati. Lacuna Coil hails from Milan,
Italy and are spreading there wings to this side of the Atlantic.
There songs will often be compared to Evanescence, but they are much
more dimensional than Evanescence. Cristina’s powerful vocal
draw you into the song and Andrea tells the powerful story with his
amazing voice. The soaring vocals on there albums alone make them
worth |
the price. While out on the Anthrax tour we caught up with Andrea
and tossed some questions off him. Here is what he had to say.
Can you give us a description of what you think Lacuna Coil sounds
like.
Andrea – Most of the time we get put in the category of Gothic Metal,
but I don’t think we really fit that. On certain aspects we fit,
we have some sort of atmospheric songs. Which could be called gothic,
but basically we are a metal band. Not like you classic heavy metal or
even the nu-metal. With the big guitars and heavy parts with more atmospheric
parts too. We like to play with the different moods.
It’s kind of hard to put a tag on you.
Andrea – Yea, that’s what we like. We have always tried to
play a lot of different type of songs. That way we don’t get chained
to a certain type of thing.
 |
How has the band developed? Has it been the
same members since day one?
Andrea – No, when we released the first EP it was ‘97
or ‘98, the line up was myself, Cristina and Marco our bass
player. On our first European tour we changed 2 guitar players and
1 drummer. They |
really didn’t have an idea what touring is about, how a musicians
career usually takes steps up and we were starting with no money. We were
friends and it was tough when it happened, but we knew what we wanted
to do. With this lineup we have been together since ’99 and that’s
what we recorded the 2 albums with and an EP.
How is it different for you as band touring America verses Europe?
Andrea – Mostly we have toured every part of Europe, so when we
came over here it was a big difference. The life styles are different,
but the kids are great in both places. I guess in America the audience
is more mixed, you have nu-metal, and gothic kids along with classic metal
people. In Europe it’s more like if you listen gothic so you go
to the gothic show and if you listen to metal you go to the metal show.
Over here it puts you in front of different markets too.
Andrea – That’s why we like to tour with different bands,
it’s important to reach different kinds of people.
You have toured the states with Type O Negative and now your out
with Anthrax.
Andrea – We also went out with Otep here in America. With Type O
that was our kind of audience, there was a natural connection. With Anthrax
we had to go out and win the crowd, cause they don’t know us.

Lacuna Coil hails from Italy, what type of musical scene exists
over there?
Andre – Were we are from is Milan, it’s a big city. There
is a lot of people and music stores and pubs, so the scene is there, maybe
it doesn’t compare to the rock scene in America, but still it’s
growing. It’s not mainstream.
Any plans on new material or a new album?
Andrea – We are planning on taking the month of October off and
working on the new album. We already have 6 songs. Not with any vocals,
but just the music.
Can you write on the road.
Andrea – Na, I can’t, I have to be home and think about things
and what we did. We should be in the studio in January and hope to release
it in the summer hopefully buy September.
 |
What else would you like to add?
Andrea – Just that we are on tour in America and having fun.
Our audience over he is growing, we have done some of the radio station
festivals. We’ve gotten some stations playing the single. And
we have the distribution over here through Caroline, so it’s
growing. |
