Could Boondox save Psychopathic Records? After years of mediocre offerings from the label, including from the big acts, such as co-owners, Insane Clown Posse, 2nd string acts that could never find their place on the label, and contest winners that got so much flack, nobody cared, Boondox came out of left field last year. Claimed to be an “evil scarecrow”, Boondox prides itself on the more southern rap feel than Psychopathic’s usual urban fare. Punpkinhed, Boondox’s second offering, seems to be a quick fill EP with four new songs and two remixes.
This album continues the themes started on “The Harvest” with some dark tales from the south, “Pumpkinhead”, “Sleep Walker”, do this to great effect, like a horror movie to music. One of the reasons many get into something like this in the first place. But then we get to “Southern Nights”. Ouch. But “Suffering” brings us back with a nice, mellow song that feels like the true end of the album. Psychopathic seems to have gone remix crazy lately, with the Wraith Remixes, remixes on Forgotten Freshness 4, and now here we have remixes of “They Pray with Snakes” and “Seven” from “The Harvest”. Both seem to be pumped up with some electronics, but are interesting diversions for this album.
Overall, a great addition to any “wicked shit” fan out there, but it’s not the next Mostasteless by any means.
