How do you feel about bands who make it big on a cover song?

Kerry King – Slayer – It certainly can’t be to fulfilling. If that’s you only way in the door than jam you foot in there and make the door wider.
Mike E. Clark : I think its ok. Unless its Limp Bizkit doing a Who song, that should be punishable by death! I like what Manson did with “Sweet Dreams” depends on the artist
Matt Zane – Society 1 - If you in the music business to be a business man then I guess it would be a smart move. As an artist to want to make it off a cover song, I don’t really consider it to necessarily to be that genuine or something to have a valid place within music as art. I don’t really like getting down on any particular band because that’s how they chose to present themselves to the public. Is it anything that I agree with or what I want to do with myself, no not really. Other people see things differently, so whatever. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people can’t write songs these days. It’s unfortunate to, because bands like Alien Ant Farm are great musicians, but with out that song would we have ever heard of them? We actually have done one cover song for a Black Sabbath tribute record Hell Rules, the song is on our website so you can check it out. www.society1.net We did our own interpretation of it rather than a tool to get us played on the radio or something like that.
Dr.Espling - I think if youdo your own interpertation it’s cool. I actually have a CD of all kinds of downloaded/bootleg versions of different bands doing cover songs. It’s pretty cool to me to hea those big bands change a song all around. But to make it on the merits of a cover song is kinds a bottom feeder type thing to do.
Threigh of Blackstone Valey Crew: I think that it is really fun doing cover songs. At the same time I feel like record companies don’t have enough faith in the original songs, on the particular album to release one as a single.

Jester
We would have done it a long time ago, but we couldn’t afford the copyrights. We do a mean PJ Harvey song called “50 foot Queenie.” Hey whatever works. Stay true, and if you can complement the song then fucking go for it. It’s tough as hell to get noticed. To each is own. Keep reaching for your dreams.
